Why is Minimata Bay in Japan famous?

Hundreds of villagers in Minimata Bay in Japan were poisoned between 1953 and 1960, and 649 of them died. The reason? They had eaten shellfish which had been poisoned by the mercury dumped into the sea by local industries.
