Why are oceans known as reservoirs of heat?

The oceans absorb and store heat much more effectively than land or ice surfaces. They work like heat engines within our climate system. They absorb solar energy at the equator, and carry it along in currents towards the poles. This is why oceans are called reservoirs of heat.
