Why are dugongs known as the cows of the sea?

Dugongs are called sea cows because they graze on sea grasses that grow around the warm shallow waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans. Dugongs can grow up to 12 feet, and are very shy. Long ago, sailors who saw them from a distance thought that they looked like humans, and made up stories about them. In these stories, dugongs were beautiful women with tails like fish called mermaids.
