Bartolomeu was the first European to sail round the Cape of Good Hope. He was chosen by King John II of Portugal to explore the southern most point of Africa.
Dias helped Vasco da Gama to plan his successful voyage to India in 1497. He also helped in the design of the ships and even traveled part of the way with Gama.
