Alvin is a manned deep-sea-research submarine in operation since 1964. It is named after Allyn Vine, the man who thought up the idea of submarine that could carry people to the bottom of the ocean for research. Alvin ‘lives’ permanently on a ship called ‘Atlantis’ which has crane that lifts Alvin on and off the deck and places it on water.
