Amerigo Vespucci (1451 – 1512) was the explorer who discovered America, and after whom it was named. He was a merchant and banker from Florence in Italy, who went to live in Spain. He met Christopher Columbus, became interested in exploration, and made several voyages. He wrote several accounts of his expeditions.
