The coldest ocean is the Arctic Ocean. It is partly frozen most of the year, and in some places, the ice is 1.5 metres thick. In summer, much of the ice melts, reducing the area covered by sea ice. Great chunks of ice break away from the ends of glaciers, and float away as towering icebergs.
