What are the adaptations of the desert animals ?

As we all know, deserts are regions in the earth where water is very scarce. Water is vital to animals, and therefore, replacing any lost water is very important to animal’s survival. So, desert animals have developed methods of conserving whatever little water is available, in the best way is possible.

Many desert animals avoid the problems of heat and water loss by spending all day in burrows and only coming out to feet at night when it is cooler. Rodents also store food in their burrows, where the food absorbs moisture from the air. A unique technique of survival is that of the thick-tailed mouse found in the Sahara Desert. It stores fat in its tail, which is converted into water when needed.

Large animals of desert to put up with the heat of the desert. Camels and types of antelopes like the Oryx and addax allow their bodies to heat up more than other animals. They begin to sweat only at much higher temperatures and preventing water loss. Camels can survive for long without drinking water and the addax never drinks! They manage to survive on the dew, and the water contained in their food.

Animals that hunt other animals for their food get their supply of water from their prey. The sand grouse is one of the few birds that live in the desert. It flies many miles to collect water for its chicks. The water is collected by soaking its breast feathers
