What are fluid feeders ?

Animals that feed only on liquids are called fluid feeders. Most insects are fluid feeders. They have specially designed mouth parts for fluid feeding.

Many insects fed by sucking blood and sap from living animals and plants. They are called parasites. Others, like butterflies and bees, feed on nectar which is a sugary food made by flowers. To do this, they have a long tube in their mouths called the proboscis. The tube can reach into the flowers, so that the insect can suck the nectar easily.

Flies pump their own saliva onto solid food. The saliva partly digests the food into a liquid state, which the fly then sucks up. Spiders and hummingbirds are other fluid feeders. Why even humans feed only on their mother’s milk when they are babies!
