Coelenterates are a primitive group of animals that have three major characteristic in common.

Coelenterates have a simple three layered body. They have a body cavity with only one opening through which they take in food, water and oxygen and also throw out wastes and water. They also have stinging tentacles.

Coelenterates are generally found in the sea, with a few exceptions. Corals, sea anemones and jellyfish are some coelenterates that you might have heard about or seen.
