What are chordates ?

Chordates are a group of animals that includes vertebrates and invertebrates. All chordates, at some time in their life cycle, possess a supporting rod on the top of their bodies or backs, which is called the dorsal side. This supporting rod is called a notochord. They also have a dorsal nerve cord.

Though it is hard to believe, both the sea squirt and humans are chordates! Some of the features seen in sea squirts are also present in the human embryo for a very short while.
